You run a small business, you're short on hands, and you've heard about virtual assistants in Madagascar. There are plenty of options. But between a solo freelancer, a platform, a large call center and a small, hands-on agency, the differences are huge, and they don't show on a homepage.

This guide gives you the questions to ask before you hand your emails, your customers or your prospecting to someone you may never meet in person.

Why choose a virtual assistant in Madagascar?

Languages are part of the job. In Madagascar, French is learned at school and used at work, and many young professionals also work in English. A Malagasy assistant can write to your customers in polished French or English, which matters a lot for customer service or prospecting.

The time difference with Europe is small. Antananarivo is on UTC+3: one or two hours ahead of France, Belgium and Switzerland depending on the season. Your assistant works your hours, with no night shifts. For Quebec, the gap is bigger, but some agencies organize teams on Montreal hours: ask about it.

The industry is well established. Outsourcing has been around in Madagascar for a long time. You'll find experienced companies, but also a wide range of very different offers. That's why choosing well matters.

Virtual assistant agency or freelancer: the real difference

A freelancer can be excellent. But you hire her, train her and manage her, and if she gets sick, goes on vacation or finds another client, everything stops on your end.

An agency offering a managed service does this work for you: it hires, trains, supervises and replaces. You delegate the work, not a person to manage. That's often more reassuring for a small business that has no time to become a remote manager.

Before comparing prices, ask yourself who handles the problem on the day your assistant isn't there.

8 questions to ask an agency before you outsource

 1. Who hires and supervises the assistant? Ask who follows her work day to day, and who you talk to if something goes wrong.

 2. What happens if she's away? A clear answer (“a colleague takes over”) beats a vague “we'll figure it out.”

 3. Do assistants stay for the long term? An assistant who changes every six months means six months of training lost each time.

 4. How do you check her language skills? Ask for a written exchange and a call before you start, especially for customer service or prospecting.

 5. What hours does she work? Yours, or the agency's? If your customers are in another time zone, this question is essential.

 6. How is she trained on your tools? Who handles it, how long it takes, and what's ready on day one.

 7. How is your data protected? Logins, passwords, confidentiality: a serious agency offers a confidentiality agreement without you having to ask twice.

 8. How is the price calculated, and is there a commitment? A fixed price known in advance is easier to track than an hourly meter. Also check the commitment period and the notice period.
